Freedom to Express Yourself!

You'd love to change the look in your apartment but the rental contract that you signed says you can't! The first few years of seeing the same style of apartment is okay, but after few years, it gets dull, that you would want to change it up a bit.

Many landlords do not allow their tenants to paint the apartment, but if you're on friendly terms with your landlord then he might cut you some slack.  That is.... if you have proven to him that you are a responsible tenant and by painting the walls to your desired color won't damage the apartment at all!  The expenses of changing the paint would be shouldered by you, of course!  Some landlords would give you the permission to paint the walls but on the condition that, when you leave, you would have to repaint it back to its original color. The expenses again, will be coming from your own pockets.

Most apartments come with shades or blinds that are neutral in colors.  And again, most landlords do not want you to remove or replace what they have supplied, although they might permit you to use curtains or draperies in addition to the window coverings already installed. Some landlords will forbid you to nail or screw anything into the walls. Some won't mind, as long as you fill the holes when you leave the apartment for good. But always, always ask for permission before you take any action.  Landlords may not take any changes too kindly.

And there are a lot of other things that you would like to change as well, like the flooring, you may prefer to have a bare floor instead of the carpet readily installed.  Or you may want to add kitchen cupboards or you may want additional cabinet because the existing one doesn't hold all your clothes anymore.

Having your own home gives you a sense of freedom to do whatever you want do and when you want to do it.  Call it expressing your individuality! Nobody will tell you that you can't paint the walls yellow.  You can even paint your walls fuschia pink and nobody will care. (Although you would have to get matching furniture to go with your fuschia wall.  But that's entirely up to you!)  There are some considerate landlords that would allow you to change the look of your apartment but only to a limited extent.  So, be sure to always be on his good side so you can have more freedom with your apartment.
